Mineral Commodities Tormin mineral sands operation consist of five Concentrate product streams;

  • High Grade Garnet Concentrate
  • High Grade Zircon Rutile Concentrate
  • High Grade Ilmenite Concentrate
  • Medium Grade Ilmenite Concentrate
  • High Grade Magnetite Concentrate

In 2015, the Tormin operation produced in excess of 250,000 tonnes of Zircon / Rutile / Ilmenite and Garnet concentrate. The production of concentrates are expected to increase in the second half of 2016 to an annualised production in excess of 600,000 tonnes per annum, including 60,000 tonnes of Zircon / Rutile concentrate 340,000 tonnes of Ilmenite concentrate, 40,000 tonnes of magnetite and 240,000 tonnes of Garnet concentrate.

The Tormin Zircon / Rutile concentrate is one of the highest grade non-magnetic concentrates being produced in the world. The concentrate contains in excess of 70% high quality Zircon and 10-14% Rutile. Zircon / Rutile production from Tormin in 2015 was in excess of 40,000 tonnes per annum, and is expected to increase to an annualised production of 60,000 tonnes in 2016.

The Zircon / Rutile Concentrate is sold globally in bulk or bagged to tertiary MSP Processing facilities where it is electrostatically processed into final Zircon and Rutile products.

Zircon is an opaque, hard wearing, inert mineral. It is primarily used in the production of ceramic tiles. Other applications include use in refractories and foundry casting and a growing array of specialty applications as zirconia and zirconium chemicals, including in nuclear fuel rods, catalytic fuel converters and in water and air purification systems.

Rutile is a high grade element of Ti02 Titanium Dioxide; which is used as a direct feed into pigment plants to make the opaquer base which forms the major component of finished paint. It is also used in welding electrode production.

PREMIUM ILMENITE CONCENTRATE

Tormin’s premium Ilmenite Concentrate is a high grade magnetic concentrate which includes in excess of 85% – 90% Ilmenite and minimum of 8-12% Garnet.

The High-Grade Ilmenite Concentrate is sold globally in bulk shipments to tertiary Magnetic Separation Plant (MSP) processing facilities where it is processed into finished Sulphate Ilmenite with a 48-52% Ti02 component. Due to its high Iron component, the Tormin finished Ilmenite product is ideal for direct feed into downstream smelting resulting where the Primary Ilmenite Feed Stock is turned into high grade Titanium Slag and the Pig Iron Billets.

Ilmenite   concentrates   are   naturally   occurring products and are subject to size variations.

Ilmenite is the primary feed stock of Titanium Dioxide. Ilmenite is the main source of titanium dioxide which is used in paints, fabrics, plastics, paper, sunscreen, food and cosmetics.

ILMENITE CONCENTRATE

The Tormin Ilmenite Concentrate is a medium-grade magnetic concentrate which includes in excess of 70% Ilmenite and minimum of 15% Garnet as well as Zircon.

The Ilmenite Concentrate is sold globally in bulk shipments to tertiary Magnetic Separation Plant (MSP) processing facilities where it is processed into finished Sulphate Ilmenite with a 47-50% Ti02 component. Due to its high Iron component, the Tormin finished Ilmenite product is ideal for direct feed into downstream smelting resulting where the Primary Ilmenite Feed Stock is turned into high grade Titanium Slag and the Pig Iron Billets.

Ilmenite concentrate production from Tormin in 2015 was in excess of 100,000 tonnes per annum, and will increase to annualized production of 340,000 tonnes in 2016.

MAGNETITE CONCENTRATE

The Tormin Manetite concentrate is separated via Light Intensity Magnet Circuit (LIMs) and it is collected out of the Ilmenite Concentrate.

Current production estimates are approximately 3,000 – 3,500 tonnes per month, about 36,000 – 40,000 tonnes per year.

Magnetite offers considerable advantages in its concentrated form. The magnetic properties of magnetite enable it to be readily refined into an iron ore concentrate, providing a viable iron-making commodity for premium quality steel production and releasing less carbon emissions in steel production.

GARNET CONCENTRATE

The Tormin Garnet concentrate is a highest grade Garnet concentrate produced in the world and includes in excess of 70% coarse-medium grain Garnet Content, and a minimum of 20% Ilmenite and 1% Rutile and Zircon respectively. Garnet concentrate production from Tormin in 2015 was in excess of 280,000 tonnes per annum, and will decrease to annualized production of 240,000 tonnes in 2016, but at an increased Garnet Concentrate grade of 80%.

Garnet is usually thought of as a gemstone but most garnet is mined for industrial uses. The majority of garnet mining is for massive garnet that is crushed and used to make abrasives. The major industrial uses of garnet are for waterjet cutting purposes, abrasive blasting media, water filtration granules, and abrasive powders.
